What is the Alfa Laval Cooling Pod?
The Cooling Pod puts heat rejection in a standard shipping container, so a site adds cooling as a delivered module rather than a construction project. Alfa Laval offers 500 kW and 1,000 kW designs and states plainly that actual heat transfer varies with ambient conditions. That constraint governs any dry cooler because capacity falls as outside air warms. Three configurations are published. The first is a dry cooler alone, for cold-plate and other water or glycol loops. The second adds a gasketed plate heat exchanger, which separates the building loop from the equipment loop where isolation matters. The third adds four to ten brazed plate units for dedicated loops, which is the configuration aimed at immersion tanks carrying dielectric fluid. Because it rejects heat to air, the pod uses no water, which suits water-scarce sites. Variable frequency drives trim fan power to conditions, and controls range from simple start and stop to full drive control. Construction is bolted steel with backdraft prevention louvers. Alfa Laval does not publish the ambient temperature the module ratings assume, the airflow, the fan power, the sound level, or the approach temperature of the internal exchangers. Ask for a selection at the site's design ambient and its worst recorded day, since a dry cooler chosen at an average temperature will be short on the day that matters.
