What is the Lenovo ThinkSystem N1380 Neptune enclosure?
The N1380 is the enclosure that carries Lenovo's water loop to the trays inside it. It occupies 13U of a standard 19-inch rack, holds eight compute trays, and distributes water through an integrated manifold with blind-mate connectors that seal as a tray slides home. Lenovo specifies water rather than a glycol mixture, and the shut-off is a dual-interlock ball valve of the same FD83 family sold by Danfoss. Inlet water may run from the dew point up to 45 degrees Celsius, with an operating range of 2 to 50 degrees, so most climates can supply it from a dry cooler and leave the chiller off. Flow is published per component rather than as one number: 3.0 liters per minute for each compute tray at 45 degree water and 2.8 for each power conversion station, which gives 35.2 liters per minute for a full enclosure of eight trays and four stations. Colder water needs less flow. Chassis power capacity is up to 54 kW using four 15 kW stations in N+1, and three enclosures reach about 162 kW in one rack. Water must be clean, treated and filtered to 50 micron, and Lenovo ties warranty support to maintaining that quality over the system's life. Ask what the water-quality obligation means in practice for sampling and treatment, since it is a condition of support rather than a recommendation.
