What is the Carrier CDU 65LL?
Carrier's entry into liquid cooling is a liquid-to-liquid coolant distribution unit sold under its QuantumLeap data center range. The published rating is 1,350 kW at a 4 degree Celsius approach temperature difference, with flow from zero to 1,650 liters per minute at 350 kPa using a single pump. Carrier says the optional high-efficiency heat exchanger brings the approach down to 2 degrees against an industry-common 4. A narrower approach means the server loop runs closer to facility water, so the chiller can be asked for warmer water, and Carrier claims up to 15 percent chiller energy saving on that basis. Treat the saving as a modelled figure: it depends on the plant, the climate and the control strategy, none of which the flyer states. Availability features include dual pumps in N+1, sensor redundancy and an in-unit uninterruptible power supply. The cabinet is 986 mm deep with access on three sides, and controls speak BACnet, Modbus and Carrier's own protocol. The family extends to 5 MW in skid designs. Carrier does not publish the secondary fluid, the pressure drop across the exchanger, or the electrical load. Ask for the selection at the site's own facility-water temperature, and for the assumptions behind the 15 percent figure before it is used in a business case.
